This was a very enjoyable way for the children to learn about the bible.

We watched Reverend Gamble put special oil on the fake baby's head.

Then we saw her put water on the baby's head with an important special pearl shell. Lucy and Guy gave the baby to Reverend Gamble.

We all enjoyed our visit to the church.

On Friday the 9th October 2009, the children of Colston Bassett School listened to a talk about fossils by Dr Stephenson, palaeontologist.

The purpose of the visit was so we could learn about fossils. Dr Stephenson explained to us that animals were much bigger then. The dragonfly was 1 metre wide and they also had 2 metre scorpions!

Now I know a lot more about fossils.

The children wrote down winter words from firsthand experience, which were then used in descriptions of a winter scene.

Our younger pupils counted footprints and used them to mark out enormous mathematical shapes across the snow.

Break times enabled everyone to use their excellent team-work skills to begin constructing an igloo, with windows made from ice, added later in the week.

Our final week of the half term was made complete when we were delighted to welcome visiting vet, Colin to support our pupils' personal education on ‘Animals and Us'. He spoke about his animal work and everyone was fascinated to see a selection of x-rays taken of different ‘patients' who had attended his surgery for treatment! All the children were given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of this very interesting talk.

We were thrilled to be joined by so many parents, grandparents, friends and local villagers. The children performed and sang beautifully. All the guests enjoyed drinks and homemade mince pies after the performance and a great time was had by all.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

The children return to Belvoir Castle

The children were once again invited to spend an afternoon at Belvoir Castle to decorate one of the Christmas trees in the castle for ‘Belvoir by Candlelight’ and the ‘Christmas Fantasia week 2008’. The theme at the castle this year was ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and the children enjoyed making the decorative flowers and glitter tree decorations at school. There was much excitement when the afternoon arrived to visit the castle and dress the tree with our decorations.

Once our tree was finished, everyone was thrilled to be given a guided tour of the castle to see all the decorations for the Christmas celebrations. There was also a chance for the children to experience the Victorian school room and write on the old fashioned slates.
As part of their topic for the Spring Term, our reception children have been learning about people who help us.

During a sunny week in March, the children were very excited when the local Firefighters and the Police very kindly managed to visit us on two consecutive days to explain their very different roles in the community.

The Officers explained all about the work they do and also demonstrated the equipment they all use for various different situations. The children were fascinated.

Mrs Wilson was chosen by the children to model the firefighters protective clothing and Mrs Heafford tried out the Policeman's handcuffs!

As well as being a very valuable learning experience, the children all had great fun.
