Preschool/Nursery

Our own preschool nursery feeder, Millfield Nursery School, is owned and managed by John and Liz Miller, also the Directors of Colston Bassett Preparatory School. Millfield, at Cropwell Butler, 3 miles away, has been established for 34 years, is highly regarded in the area and is the main feeder to our Reception class each year.

At Millfield we feel that the first steps a child makes into the world of learning are crucial to their development and ability to realise their potential in later years. We place great importance on these early days, seeking to provide a learning environment which offers the individual child a very positive beginning. Our unique setting gives children the opportunity to learn both inside and outside as well as through adult led activities and through structured and free play.

Millfield is set within its own 8 acres of beautiful countryside in the Vale of Belvoir.

The natural environment around us provides endless opportunities to explore and experience seasonal changes in the natural world, whilst inside, rooms are bright and welcoming and set up to provide for the needs of young children. The curriculum takes as its starting point, the governments' Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines and we add our own unique blend of experience. Early preschool skills in writing, reading and letter sounds are recorded in a series of activity workbooks designed by teachers and provided by the nursery. Children are motivated to work at their own pace and at a level which is relevant to them. Completed books are sent home so parents can see the progress their child is making. Learning to read, will be introduced, if and when appropriate.

Parental involvement is highly valued with ongoing communication and regular one to one termly parent meetings are prioritised to ensure the greatest outcome for your child, prior to him/her starting.

Reception Class Preparation

Reception Class Preparation

At Millfield we fully understand how important the first encounter with formal school life is for both the child and parents. Our goal is to ensure that every child has fun, enjoys learning, is happy and is given opportunities to grow.

Historically, most of each year’s Reception pupils have chosen to attend Millfield first, so your child will already have formed firm friendships with their own peer group. We then ensure a smooth, gentle transition to Colston Bassett School with a series of “taster” visits/days from the Half Term prior to starting school in September. The children all settle very quickly, as on these days they all go together with their friends and are also accompanied by a familiar member of the Millfield staff too.

You can rest assured that we will nurture and encourage your child to reach their full potential.

Millfield offers flexible sessions. You can choose between full day sessions, morning sessions, afternoon sessions or a combination of these depending on individual requirements. Millfield participates in the Government Nursery Education Grant Scheme.

Our website highlights some of the key facilities and activities of Millfield, however choosing the right preschool and school for your child is such an important decision to make, so please come and visit us to see what Millfield can offer you and your child.

As a general rule the children do their core subjects in the morning. The remaining subjects take place in the afternoon. A copy of our timetable is available on request but is, of course, subject to change at any time in order to allow us to be spontaneous. We wish to have the flexibility to maximise opportunities as they arise, for example, on a walk in and around the village we may decide to carry out topic-related map work, thereby extending the amount of time spent out in the local community.
